Washington: The case against U.S. President-elect Donald Trump concerning the January 6th Capitol riot has been dropped, as prosecutors failed to prove interference in the 2020 elections. Special Counsel Jack Smith announced the dismissal of the case, stating that while the charges still stand, Justice Department policy prevents action against a sitting president.

Earlier this year, Smith had filed a new indictment in August related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. The charges were similar to those in a previous indictment but were adjusted following a Supreme Court decision regarding presidential immunity. In this new indictment, the accusation that Trump sought to use the Department of Justice's powers to alter election results was removed.
